Heir of fire - sarah j. maas
spoiler-ish? proceed with caution
The beginning of this book was very slow for me, but it ended up being pretty good! I think this has been my favorite of the series so far. Like I said in one of my last reviews, this series gets better with every book for me. We finally get the Celaena we've been hoping to see! Her growth in this book was tremendous, and we not only see growth in her, but in our other main characters as well, Dorian and Chaol. I feel like I was lacking an emotional connection to the characters in this series, but this book confirmed some emotional connection to them.
In Heir of Fire, we also get some more world building that really helped me get a better grasp on this world and it's conflicts. Along with this we get introduced to some new creatures, resulting in some pretty epic fights and action packed, nail biting scenes.
Also, we get introduced to Rowan! tbh I hated his character for a while until his past came to light and he was almost just like Celaena. The love of his life was taken from her, and he has been enslaved, just as Celaena had been. Eventually we find out why he treated Celaena the way he did, why he trained her the way he did. To confront her past and to let it go, to come into her own person, be wholly and truly herself. There wasn't a whole lot of talk about romance between the two of them but there are hints that they are meant to be together. I mean, the way he talks about her towards the end. :') All this to say I want them to end up together SO bad.
Some other notes:
- I hate the king more and more each book.
- I am heartbroken for Dorian. He's just the sweetest and gets dealt some horrible cards.
- I don't know how I feel about Chaol.
- Celaena is one of the strongest FMCs I've read.
- What's the deal with the witches and covens? Honestly these chapters threw me off so much. I know they'll most likely be important and come into play but even with that in mind a lot of it seems redundant.
- I am enjoying this series at the moment but if I feel the same way at the end, I'd like to get the physical copies to read through since I've been listening to all of these.
